ToggleI’m Mohamed Elhawary, an R&D Data Scientist at Datategy.
I hold a PhD in Applied Machine Learning from Arts et Métiers. Before my PhD, I worked as a Data Scientist Research Engineer at ENSAM Institute for one year. Datategy marks my first role post-PhD, and I’m genuinely grateful to be part of this incredible team.
I’m passionate about leveraging machine learning to solve complex, real-world problems. My curiosity drives me to explore innovative solutions, whether by designing new algorithms or uncovering novel applications of existing techniques. Outside of work, I enjoy diving into the latest advancements in AI research and experimenting with cutting-edge models to push the boundaries of what’s possible.
What is your Role at Datategy?
I focus on the end-to-end development of machine learning and generative AI solutions, leveraging the capabilities of our papAI platform to deliver innovative proofs of concept (POCs) for clients. My work centers around applying generative AI and large language models (LLMs) to solve a wide range of challenges, including machine translation, retrieval-augmented generation (RAG), question answering, conversational AI (chatbots), text summarization, named entity recognition (NER), text classification, and sentiment analysis.
In addition to generative AI, I bring extensive experience in deep reinforcement learning (DRL) and machine learning for control and optimization. This expertise allows me to tackle complex problems in dynamic systems and optimization tasks, further enhancing the breadth and depth of solutions I can deliver to clients. By combining cutting-edge AI techniques with our platform’s flexibility, I strive to create impactful solutions tailored to the unique needs of each client, bridging advanced technology with practical applications.
What does your Typical Workday Look Like?
My day typically begins at 9:30 AM, starting with organizing and updating my to-do list. I reflect on the accomplishments of the previous day and set clear objectives for the tasks ahead. This daily routine helps me stay focused and maintain a structured approach to my work.
A significant portion of my day is dedicated to programming and research, where I delve into the complexities of fine-tuning and aligning large language models (LLMs). Whether it’s customizing pre-trained models for specific use cases, optimizing their performance, or exploring novel alignment techniques to enhance safety and reliability, I immerse myself in these challenges to advance our AI capabilities.
Around midday, I take a one-hour lunch break to recharge—either by enjoying a home-cooked meal or stepping outside for fresh air. This time helps me return to work with renewed focus and energy.
Collaboration is an integral part of my role, and I frequently engage with my colleagues to discuss innovative ideas and tackle challenging problems. These interactions foster creativity and allow us to refine our approaches to complex projects, ensuring we deliver impactful solutions.
In the afternoon, I often enjoy a quick “goûter break,” indulging in a light snack to keep my energy levels up. It’s a small but refreshing moment that helps me power through the rest of the day.
As the day winds down, I review my progress, wrap up any ongoing tasks, and plan for the following day. While my day typically ends around 6:30 PM, our flexible work culture ensures I can adapt my schedule as needed to meet deadlines or dive deeper into particularly exciting projects
What's your Favorite Part of your Job?
What I value most about my role is the incredible freedom to explore, innovate, and solve complex challenges. At Datategy, we’re encouraged to devise creative solutions and are given the time and resources to bring them to life.
This autonomy fosters a culture where innovation thrives, enabling us to experiment with new techniques and push the boundaries of what’s possible —whether it’s fine-tuning large language models or exploring novel alignment strategies. The emphasis on continuous learning and improvement not only sharpens my skills but also enriches the collective expertise of our team.
This supportive environment empowers me to make meaningful contributions, blending creativity and technical excellence to drive progress and deliver impactful solutions. The liberty to innovate and grow is what makes my work truly fulfilling
What's your Next Challenge at Datategy?
My next challenge is to develop advanced tools and features in our papAI platform to help users better use and understand our NLP and computer vision models, particularly large language models (LLMs). Bridging the gap between complex AI systems and human comprehension is essential for improving transparency, trust, and usability in both text and visual data applications.
At the same time, I am dedicated to continuously refining our models, ensuring that our solutions evolve with the latest advancements in NLP, LLMs, and computer vision. This ongoing optimization is crucial for enhancing both the accuracy and interpretability of our models.
